The Early Years of Lady Minto Hospital

Lady Minto Hospital circa 1921

The original hospital consisted of a basement and two floors.

Main Floor

The main floor was made up of six private rooms, one semi-private and one female public ward of five beds. There was also the matron's office, a medicine room, a small linen room and one bathroom that also served as the utility room. All obstetrics were carried out in one small room on this floor.

Four of the six private rooms were donated and maintained by private individuals or institutions. These four were known as the Dempsey ward, the Masonic ward, the Oddfellows ward, and the Rothschild ward.

Second Floor

The second floor contained a ward of four beds, a ward of eight beds, one semi-private, one private, one general storeroom, one operating room, one small scrub room which also contained the sterilizing equipment, and one medicine room and nurses' station combined.

There was one bathroom which the nurses used for their utility room as well, and one public toilet. The one private room was furnished and maintained by the railroad, and was thus known as the train-men's ward.
