General accountabilities:

The Diabetes Educator is a part-time (37.5 hours bi-weekly) position reporting to the MICs Diabetes Program Leader. This position is responsible for the day-to-day operations, including scheduling, teaching, counselling and follow-up, within the scope of practice of a Registered Nurse, of the Diabetes program within the communities of Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls. The Diabetes Educator works within the larger team of diabetes clinicians to develop, implement, and evaluate diabetes education, programs and treatment services, provide education awareness and act as a resource consultant within the community and to other health care professionals.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing
  • Current unrestricted registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Preference will be given to a nurse with a minimum of 2 year successful experience in a nationally recognized clinical diabetes education program with experience in health education and counseling
  • Current skills and knowledge in diabetes must be current and must be certified or working towards certification as a Diabetes Educator with the Canadian Diabetes Educators Certification Board
  • Demonstrated leadership and facilitator/coaching and organizational skills
  • Self-directed and motivated
  • Proven ability to build strong working relationships, internal and external to the organization
  • Budget management and proposal writing experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to speak French preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License and access to reliable transportation
  • Travel to other sites will be required from time to time
